Emily & James’ Burtonfields Hall Wedding

From the moment I arrived at Burtonfields Hall near Stamford Bridge, I knew Emily and James’ wedding would be something truly special.
At the end of August, I had the absolute joy of photographing their day. It was my first time at this stunning venue and honestly, I was smitten. Burtonfields feels like you’ve been handed the keys to the most beautiful home and told “go on then, make it yours for the weekend.” And that’s exactly what Emily and James did — their family and friends had free run of the place, which gave the whole day such a relaxed, homely vibe.
Emily herself had actually spotted Burtonfields long before it became their wedding venue (even before the engagement!) and loved the look of it. Her mum told me the story while Emily was getting ready, and I just thought it was so lovely — almost like the place had been waiting for them all along. It felt like the perfect backdrop for the kind of wedding they had dreamed of.

James had one wish for their day: to marry outside. Emily, of course, loved the idea too. But Yorkshire weather had its usual say, and right up until the last minute there was a will-it-won’t-it dance with the wind. In the end, they lucked out — the sun shone, there was just a gentle breeze, and their dream of an outdoor ceremony came true. Watching them exchange vows outside, surrounded by their nearest and dearest, was such a special moment that perfectly set the tone for the day.

If you know me, you’ll know I light up when dogs are part of a wedding. Emily and James’ gorgeous red Labrador, Lyla, was a huge part of their day (as you've probably noticed). She padded around like she owned the place, sitting patiently during the ceremony, greeting guests, and generally stealing the show. Lyla had been with us at their engagement session too (back when she was only seven months old), so it was extra special to see her all grown up and right in the middle of it all. Moments like these remind me why I love capturing real, candid wedding photos.

Their friends also brought incredible energy to the day. One of James’ mates played the piano in the hall while a group of Emily’s friends sang alongside him, creating an electric atmosphere. When it rained later, instead of dampening spirits, it kept everyone together, wandering between the beautiful rooms, playing giant chess, chatting, and soaking up the cosy vibe. I even got talking to one of the guests who’s now lined up to give me a riding lesson — how fab is that? These little, unexpected experiences are the magic of documenting weddings.

When it came to portraits, Emily and James told me they trusted me 100% — music to my ears as a documentary-styled wedding photographer. So when the rain came, they were more than happy to grab an umbrella and head outside, resulting in beautifully atmospheric photos that capture them exactly as they were on the day. Later, when night fell, we got playful. Armed with direct flash and a stick of candyfloss, we dashed around in the dark, creating fun, funky shots that perfectly show off their personalities. Those spontaneous moments are my absolute favourite — the kind of candid wedding photos that tell a story far better than anything posed ever could.

Emily and James’ Burtonfields Hall wedding had everything I love about being a North Yorkshire Wedding Photographer: a couple totally in love, a stunning venue with history and heart, unpredictable weather that adds to the story, and a dog who quite frankly deserves her own photo album. It was an honour to be part of their day — and I left with not just wonderful memories and photos, but also a new riding lesson in the diary!
If you’re dreaming of a relaxed and personal wedding in a venue that feels like your very own country house for the weekend, Burtonfields Hall is a gem. As a North Yorkshire Wedding Photographer, I love capturing weddings here with all their character, history, and homely charm. Whether it’s outdoor vows under the sunshine, rainy-day portraits with umbrellas, or those fun, unplanned moments that make your story unique, I’d love to be there to capture it all.
